Summary

In 2008, In the Heights, a new musical from up-and-coming young artists, electrified Broadway。 The show’s vibrant mix of Latin music and hip-hop captured life in Washington Heights, the Latino neighborhood in upper Manhattan。 It won four Tony Awards and became an international hit, delighting audiences around the world。 For the film version, director Jon M。 Chu (Crazy Rich Asians) brought the story home, filming its spectacular dance numbers on location in Washington Heights。 That’s where Usnavi, Nina, and their neighbors chase their dreams and ask a universal question: Where do I belong?

In the Heights: Finding Home reunites Miranda with Jeremy McCarter, co-author of Hamilton: The Revolution, and Quiara Alegría Hudes, the Pulitzer Prize–winning librettist of the Broadway musical and screenwriter of the film。 They do more than trace the making of an unlikely Broadway smash and a major motion picture: They give readers an intimate look at the decades-long creative life of In the Heights。

Like Hamilton: The Revolution, the book offers untold stories, perceptive essays, and the lyrics to Miranda’s songs—complete with his funny, heartfelt annotations。 It also features newly commissioned portraits and never-before-seen photos from backstage, the movie set, and productions around the world。

This is the story of characters who search for a home—and the artists who created one。

I absolutely adore In The Heights。 I used to play the soundtrack on repeat in my car, as I have several other musicals since。 When I heard they were making a movie, I was nervous that it would lose something, that it would somehow become less special because it was supposed to be live and on a stage, dammit! But I was so pleasantly surprised by Chu’s vision, the changes that were made to make it flow as a narrative, and the casting choices。 I had a great night with friends after a harrowing year I absolutely adore In The Heights。 I used to play the soundtrack on repeat in my car, as I have several other musicals since。 When I heard they were making a movie, I was nervous that it would lose something, that it would somehow become less special because it was supposed to be live and on a stage, dammit! Absolutely fantastic。 Usually you see big coffee table books like this and think eh I’ll just flip through and then shelve it but nope。 I flew through this thing! It demands to be devoured。 Lin-Manuel Miranda’s lyrics always deserve to be read by themselves as well as with the music because you need that singular attention to realize how abso-freaking-lutely amazing he is at what he does。 I’ve read so many sections of songs over and over just in awe of his wordplay and rhythm and rhyming and creativity。 The intro, breathe, when you’re home, blackout, carnaval del barrio, honestly I could name every song。 And somehow I still ended up crying just READING it! Even if you’re cracked out and somehow don’t like some of the songs, reading them (along with Lin’s 5 star annotations) will give you a whole new appreciation for them。 Jeremy Mccarter does an excellent job framing each song and taking us on the journeys of both the stage musical and the film。 My biggest takeaway was how the show transformed over time and it illuminated a lot of the lyrics and characters we experience in the film。 The creative process is a beautiful thing and this book takes you on the full rollercoaster。 I enjoyed it just as much as Hamilton: A Revolution, maybe even more because we truly get the origins of Lin’s career and the community of collaborators that by the grace of God all came together。 Now when we gonna get a memoir Mr。 Miranda?! 。。。more

If you loved the "Hamiltome," then the "Bodega Bible" is right up your alley。 Behind the scenes of the creation of the musical, the movie, snippets from the creative team, the actors。。。an amazing look at the journey of the groundbreaking musical。 I laughed at Lin's annotations in the lyrics, and I cried at the "Finale" much as I cried listening to the cast recording and the movie。 If you loved the "Hamiltome," then the "Bodega Bible" is right up your alley。 Behind the scenes of the creation of the musical, the movie, snippets from the creative team, the actors。。。an amazing look at the journey of the groundbreaking musical。 I laughed at Lin's annotations in the lyrics, and I cried at the "Finale" much as I cried listening to the cast recording and the movie。 。。。more

I specifically chose to consume this book in audio form b/c I wanted to hear Lin-Manuel Miranda rapping any time that might be appropriate - and for that, at least, I wasn't disappointed。 HOWEVER, main narrator America Ferrera has a type of vocal fry I can't quite put my finger on and certainly isn't as noticeable when she's just acting。 But hour after hour of listening to her specific vocal quality made me want to 。。。 not be listening to this as an audiobook。 Not her fault。 And I get that, in k I specifically chose to consume this book in audio form b/c I wanted to hear Lin-Manuel Miranda rapping any time that might be appropriate - and for that, at least, I wasn't disappointed。 HOWEVER, main narrator America Ferrera has a type of vocal fry I can't quite put my finger on and certainly isn't as noticeable when she's just acting。 But hour after hour of listening to her specific vocal quality made me want to 。。。 not be listening to this as an audiobook。 Not her fault。 And I get that, in keeping with the theme of the whole HEIGHTSness they'd look to a well-established Latina to narrate the book。 Still, that was a big swing-and-a-miss for me。Other than that, this book was a love letter to Broadway, to the community of Latinx who strive to see representation in the arts, to the actual community of Washington Heights itself, to the creative process, and to all those "firsts"。 If you are looking to have that itch scratched, you're in for a treat。 The enthusiasm bursts off the page。 But if you're NOT looking for that, it can wear a little thin 。。。 all this WE LOOOOOOOVE EACH OTHER and WE KNEW WE WERE DOING SOMETHING BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG。 I don't begrudge them that。 I just got tired of hearing it for the 96,000th time (see what I did there?) 。。。more

A book which was about a film which was an adaptation of a stage musical should not be able to pack this emotional punch。 It should not be able to surprise me this much。 It should not rend my heartstrings so。And yet。。。 it does。 And it does。 And it does。This book is a wonderful collection of interviews and essays, spliced together as an oral history of both the stage and film productions, interwoven with Miranda's annotated lyrics and Hudes' poignant essays on the written narrative of the work。 T A book which was about a film which was an adaptation of a stage musical should not be able to pack this emotional punch。 It should not be able to surprise me this much。 It should not rend my heartstrings so。And yet。。。 it does。 And it does。 And it does。This book is a wonderful collection of interviews and essays, spliced together as an oral history of both the stage and film productions, interwoven with Miranda's annotated lyrics and Hudes' poignant essays on the written narrative of the work。 The deep layers of context it provides builds layers upon layers atop the content of the productions and, frankly, I love having it sit right next to HamilTOME。 。。。more

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s projects - musicals, books, or otherwise - have this uncanny ability to fill me with hope whenever I feel like I’ve lost it。 Anyway, this is a reallly good book。 Will read again。

In the Heights is a top tier musical for me so any chance to find out more about it’s creation will be beloved to me。Special shout out to the revelation that a line in ‘when the sun goes down’ was inspired by the moment in His Dark materials that always makes me cry - my tears everytime suddenly make sense

This is the perfect book for long-time fans, although they may already be familiar with many of the stories from other interviews, and people, like me, who took in In the Heights for the first time with the new movie。 The book tells a great story of teamwork and support among the cast and crew of the multiple productions of In the Heights。

Jess

Absolutely love In The Heights so can’t wait to see the film first opportunity I get😆

Meredith Ann

An excellent companion book to both the stage and movie productions。

It’s hard to really rate this on the merits of its literary strengths, but it set out to tell a story and it most certainly did that。 My love for the musical upon which this is focused bolstered my receptiveness to the book, and—full circle—my love for the show and soundtrack is now deeper and richer knowing what a labor of blood, sweat, and tears this was。Also, I read and listened to the audiobook, which includes the voices of Lin and Quiara alongside Jeremy McCarter。 Lin even sings a number of It’s hard to really rate this on the merits of its literary strengths, but it set out to tell a story and it most certainly did that。 My love for the musical upon which this is focused bolstered my receptiveness to the book, and—full circle—my love for the show and soundtrack is now deeper and richer knowing what a labor of blood, sweat, and tears this was。Also, I read and listened to the audiobook, which includes the voices of Lin and Quiara alongside Jeremy McCarter。 Lin even sings a number of lines, and the effect is oh-so intimate。 。。。more

A touching and insightful look at the origins and journey of IN THE HEIGHTS, including the new movie adaptation。 As someone who has only recently fallen in love with the show via the film, this book offers an incredible amount of facts, stories, and memories。

As expected, this serves as a perfect companion piece to the hamiltome (aka Hamilton: The Revolution, though if you need to be told that this probably isn't the book for you)。 I guess we're calling this one the bodega bible? (Except see this on stage if you possibly can。) Five shining stars。 。。。more

I have long been a fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegria Hudes’s In the Heights。 While I acknowledge the genius of Miranda’s Hamilton, I like In the Heights so much better。 And thus, I eagerly awaited the release of the film version of the show, delayed a year because of the pandemic。 This book, timed to release with the movie, In the Heights: Finding Home, by Miranda, Hudes, and Jeremy McCarter, is a treasure。 It chronicles the creation of the show and then goes on to detail the filming I have long been a fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegria Hudes’s In the Heights。 While I acknowledge the genius of Miranda’s Hamilton, I like In the Heights so much better。 And thus, I eagerly awaited the release of the film version of the show, delayed a year because of the pandemic。 This book, timed to release with the movie, In the Heights: Finding Home, by Miranda, Hudes, and Jeremy McCarter, is a treasure。 It chronicles the creation of the show and then goes on to detail the filming of the movie。 Any way you read it, it is remarkable, but I detail my method: First, since the book is filled with all the lyrics of the show’s songs, I read the lyrics as I listened to the Broadway cast recording。 Then I went back and read Lin’s side notes on the lyrics, bits of information that enlighten and entertain。 In the notes, we see what he was thinking when he wrote the lyrics, how he felt at the time, his observations of performers who have sung them, how the lyrics were used in the film, and friendships that were formed over those very words。 Next, I read the actual text of the book, and along with that, the recuerdos, memories from creators and cast members。 The text is rich and organized song by song, tied to the message of each song。 We go on the magnificent journey of a young nineteen-year old Puerto Rican immigrant, steeped in traditional musical theater and contemporary hip-hop, as he begins a creation that blossoms from a single idea to a world-wide hit。 The “intermission” of the book tells of the Tony Awards night when the show was validated by the Broadway community。 And then the “second act” is the fight from selling the show to filmmakers, to the casting, and on to the creation of the movie。 The book was to end with a description of a joyful premiere, but Covid-19 got in the way。 And thus, the book poignantly ends with how those involved—and all of us—have dealt with a pandemic that shut the world down and, indeed, devastated so many lives。 The new song Lin wrote for the ending credit of the film called Home All Summer is a fitting end to the book and a fitting soundtrack to our lives。 Anyone who loves this show, loves Broadway, or sees the film will revel in this book! 。。。more

Everything LMM creates turns out golden, this book is no exception。 If you loved Hamilton: the Revolution then you will adore this book。 This tells of where Lin started and how he ended up where he is today。 AGH I cannot recommend it highly enough I’d give it 500/5 if I could。
